What Is Tuscaloosa City Schools?

1. The Tuscaloosa City Schools invest in your students. The system ranks 19th among 120 Alabama school systems in per-pupil expenditures according to 1999-2000 figures. The state average is $5,657 per pupil and the City Schools' average is $6,228. 2. The school system operates on an annual budget of more than $113 million with $46 million allocated for capital outlay projects. 3. Local funds are a core resource and account for more than one-half of the school system's budget. The city's investors enable us to have more than 100 additional personnel to reduce class loads and provide special programs. 4. The City Council is highly supportive of the school system as evidenced by increased annual appropriations; generous funding to assist with a $2.4 million technology project to provide at least two computers and a printer in every classroom as well as a computer lab in every school; and a $32 million appropriation to build the northern high school and completely renovate Central High School - east and west campuses. 5. Teachers and administrators are helping find funds to provide enriching programs and activities for students. An example is the $3 million dollar 21st Century Grant that provides after school programs for the three middle schools and Martin Luther King, Jr. and Stillman Heights elementary schools for a three-year period.
