What Is The Wilderness Society Australia?

Protecting, promoting and restoring wilderness and natural processes across Australia for the survival and ongoing evolution of life on Earth. We're a grassroots organisation that came into national prominence from the epic fight to save Tasmania's beautiful Franklin River 40 years ago. Since then, we've gone on to protect nature across our great continent–from old growth forests to magnificent rivers and outback landscapes to vast blue seas. Building on our past successes, we're now taking on the biggest single threat to nature in Australia: climate change. Keeping fossil fuel reserves under the ground, where they belong, is what we need to do as a society if we're to prevent the worst effects of climate change from occurring. Currently, we're running a coordinated campaign to keep the pristine waters of the Great Australian Bight oil-free and safe from some of the world's biggest and most notorious oil companies. The Bight has one of the largest untapped oil reserves anywhere–which, if exploited, poses a great risk to both the climate and the nature of the region. Encouragingly, we've been reaching out to tens of thousands of people from across Australia and all around the world to join us in this historic campaign, and they've answered emphatically. That's why we're enlivening Australian society in order to protect and respect our natural world as part of the bigger picture. In doing so, this will create a vibrant, healthy continent with positive connections between land, water, people and wildlife. Our aim is to build long-term change in Australian society. If you want to protect Australia's extraordinary natural heritage from being dug up, dammed, cleared and wasted away; if you believe strong action needs to be taken on climate change; and if you believe that nature is central to our collective identity–then get in touch with us today.
