The Institute for Molecular Engineering (IME), established in 2011 by the University of Chicago in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory, is a transformational academic unit exploring the intersection of science and engineering. Building upon the University of Chicago’s mission of cross-collaboration and cutting-edge research, the IME will lead science and engineering research and education in new directions, solve technological problems of global significance, and continually inspire creative applications of molecular-level science. Led by Pritzker Director Matthew Tirrell, the institute partners with other research institutions, corporate industry entities, and the global bioengineering community to develop game-changing new technologies. As the IME expands its faculty, academic programming capabilities, and facilities, it will continue to be on, and indeed define, the forefront of engineering research and education. The IME began accepting applications to our doctoral program in the Fall of 2013 and matriculated our first class of graduate students in the following Fall. In the Spring of 2015, we added a robust and challenging major to our undergraduate curriculum. This is the first engineering undergraduate program to be implemented at the University of Chicago. In addition to a rigorous scientific curriculum, all of our academic programs provide design- and project-based learning opportunities, as well as product development and entrepreneurship training.
