What Is The Calhoun School?
Calhoun is a school that values the rich diversity of the human experience. It is a school that strives to build a community representative of this diversity. And it is a school that acknowledges and accepts that the work does not stop there. The true realization of a community that is both diverse and inclusive depends upon a culture in which this ideal is not viewed as separate or tangential, but as an integral component of program and of the school's self-image. An inclusive community is one in which communication is encouraged and unrestricted, so that members are not afraid to speak their minds. An inclusive community must be responsive to the needs of its members, and provide regular opportunities for dialogue and support. Active outreach is imperative to clearly demonstrate that all members of the community are valued, be they families, students or staff members. An inclusive community needs to easily accept the challenges inherent in establishing pathways of understanding, and validate and encourage those challenges instead of shying away from and avoiding them. A school must "lean into discomfort" if it intends to authentically represent the diversity of the human experience. Support needs to be provided to all constituents in doing this work, and acknowledging the inherent challenges therein. Like many other independent schools, Calhoun strives to be on the forefront of innovation and change. As such, it recognizes the essential need to reflect within our own community the same diversity that exists within the greater society. As Director of Diversity, it is my charge to reinforce this overarching commitment to contend with the challenge of sustaining a school that is both sensitive and celebratory; I wholeheartedly welcome the challenge.
