What Is Terra CO2?

Based in Denver, Colorado Terra CO2 Technology (Terra) is a high-growth, vc-backed technology company solving major environmental problems in cement production, mining, and beyond. Terra is developing low-CO2, sustainable, alternative cement with no compromise in performance. In fact, our cement has many impressive properties that only geopolymer cements can achieve. Why? For every tonne of Portland cement produced, at least 800 kg of CO2 is emitted. Globally, cement production is responsible for ~8% of all CO2 emissions. By 2030, it is estimated there will be a 25% increase in cement production. This will lead to unprecedented emissions unless an alternative low-CO2 cement is rapidly adopted. Our new method of cement production has almost no process CO2 emissions* and we can make high-quality cement from abundant rocks/minerals, dredged sediments, mine tailings, and more. We still have one foot in the mining world, where we are also applying our core cement technology. We hope that developing tailings solidification methods will provide a viable alternative to tailings dams. The focus of this work is a collaborative project with UBC to evaluate tailings-based geopolymer performance in long-term tailings storage. Our past research (patent granted) directly focused on combined carbon sequestration and acid mine drainage treatment. This application led us to the semi-final of the NRG Cosia Carbon XPrize in 2017. *If the process energy is supplied by coal, as in modern Portland cement, we expect ~50% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional cement, before any blending of SCMs.
