What Is TRANSFER?
TRANSFER is an exhibition space that explores the friction between networked practice and its physical instantiation. The gallery supports artists working with computer-based practices embedded in the networked culture of our contemporary moment. Our program emphasizes humanistic tendencies coming in contact with digital aesthetics, and is inclusive of both the rigid and mediated objects that result from that contact. The focus of our efforts happen in the gallery. We invite artists we encounter through the network to conceive solo exhibitions and collaborative projects at TRANSFER, offering them the possibility of openly addressing our walls. Each show we push on the boundaries of display technology and new forms of implementation of computer-based work. Our work begins on the Internet. As directors, our curatorial and professional practice began with networked technology – the artists we work with thrive with network practice. We seek out new studios through online exhibition spaces, the social space of the web, and by tracing the connectedness of artists we work with. We work in the experimental and the traditional. Our mission encompasses both emerging economic practices and the commercial gallery model. We pursue the principles of open culture and collaboration as a rule. We don't seek to own or control artists' outputs, but to support all aspects of their networked practice — market-oriented and otherwise. Our gallery program is people first. They are artists, advocates, critics, and curators working to advance the discourse of networked culture. Essential to developing work that occupies that space are the gatherings and exhibitions which engage audiences in physical space. TRANSFER thrives by hosting events that bring people together offline – the first physical meeting place of many longtime collaborators, we are committed to supporting and amplifying the connected communities of artists working in the digital era.
