What Is Supportive Housing Communities?

SHC is a leader in Charlotte for ending homelessness among our most vulnerable members. We have remained flexible in using best practices to advance our program, leading to a 97% success rate of keeping our residents in stable housing. SHC’s mission is to provide affordable housing to alleviate homelessness and human suffering. SHC offers a variety of housing solutions reflecting the needs among the homeless population. We offer permanent supportive housing and recovery housing for residents who are committed to drug- and alcohol-free living, and rapid rehousing for low vulnerability chronically homeless men, women and families. Permanent housing is the foundation, but it cannot erase the intergenerational poverty, mental health, lack of access to healthcare and other systematic struggles that come with homelessness. SHC is working with the staff, volunteers and partners to rebuild and transform lives. With organizations like SHC, Charlotte doesn’t have to be characterized as one of the worst affordable housing markets in the country. Charlotte can be characterized by its response to a housing crisis in which the community looks through a different lens into what makes people human, as opposed to what made them homeless.
