Sunrise Senior Living, Inc., formerly Sunrise Assisted living, Inc., is a provider of senior living services in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. As of December 31, 2002, the Company operated 200 communities in the United States, seven communities in Canada and two communities in the United Kingdom, with a total resident capacity of more than 16,000, including 181 communities owned by Sunrise or in which it has an ownership interest and 28 communities managed for third parties. The Company has traditionally served as an operator of assisted-living communities but has also offered independent living services and skilled nursing services at some communities. Sunrise also develops senior living communities for itself and for joint ventures in which it retains an ownership interest.
