What Is Student Voice?

Student Voice is for-students-by-students nonprofit organization catalyzing education equity and advancement through the voices and actions of students. We are the only student-led 501 © 3 attempting to bridge the gap between students and education communities around the world. Our social platform allows us to amplify and aggregate student voices via dialogue and facilitated community building through weekly Twitter chats, and our annual Student Voice Live! education summit organizes the community to provide an avenue for action. The chats and summit have featured some of the biggest names in education, including U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Acting Director for the Office of STEM at the U.S. Department of Education Camsie McAdams, and author of The New York Times’ best-selling novel, “The Smartest Kids in The World,” Amanda Ripley, to name few. Our Student Voice in Action program accelerates schools and community improvement through the implementation of student voice practices and philosophies. ABOUT US We know that dropout rates, student achievement, and workforce readiness will be improved with student voices in the classroom and in society – research shows this. We also believe that student voice can reduce absenteeism, enhance school climate, promote civic engagement, and build character amongst all students. Student Voice is inspired by the lack of student voices in education. The Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations identifies that the higher the grade level, the less likely it is that students believe in their own voices as a part of decision making in their educational experience. “Only 44% of students believe they have a voice in decision making and this dips to as low as 34% in 12th grade."
