What Is Strayer University?
For over 110 years, we've been helping students focus their education on advancing their careers. With a highly practical approach to learning, Strayer University provides tools you can immediately apply on the job. Strayer University traces its roots to April 1892, when Dr. S. Irving Strayer founded Strayer’s Business College of Baltimore City. The college expanded to Washington, D.C. in 1904. Dr. Strayer recognized that working adults needed the appropriate education to stay current with rapidly changing business requirements at the turn of the century. In 1973, the Accrediting Commission of the Association of Independent Colleges and Schools accredited Strayer College as a Senior College of Business. Since 1981, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education has accredited Strayer University. Strayer College received approval in the fall of 1981 from the State Council of Higher Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia to offer programs at campuses in Virginia; and in 1996, the school was approved to conduct business in the state of Maryland. From 1981 through 2001, 16 campuses were opened throughout Virginia, the District of Columbia, and Maryland.
