What Is Spy Hop Productions?
Spy Hop Productions is a nationally recognized, nonprofit youth media studio located in Salt Lake City, Utah, offering after school programs in documentary and narrative filmmaking, sound engineering, and interactive media design. Spy Hop developed the iDEA program in 2006 with support from the Utah State Office of Education to train 60 Utah educators as part of Comprehensive School Reform. Since then, hundreds more educators, administrators, and school technology specialists have participated in the week-long residential training. Today there is a vital need for programs like iDEA, in part due to the increasing pressure to hold teachers accountable for higher standards of student achievement. Accompanying this urgency is an evolving youth culture where young people are not only media consumers, but also media producers. In 2007 the Pew Internet and American Life Project reported significant statistics representing the number of American teens who socialize online, create media, and post media on the Internet. The iDEA experience was designed to combine high learning standards with media production instructional strategies relevant to youth today, engaging them in critical 21st century learning.
