What Is Special Olympics Ireland?

Special Olympics Ireland is a sports organisation for people with an intellectual disability. Through sport, athletes develop both physically and emotionally, they make new friends, realise their dreams, and know they can fit in. Special Olympics Ireland enables our athletes to achieve and win not only in sport but in life too. Special Olympics Ireland currently has almost 10,000 registered athletes participating in 15 sports in nearly 400 clubs throughout the island of Ireland. These athletes are supported by their families and a team of 30,000 volunteers who give of their time to help out at sporting and fundraising events. 2015 is a massive year for Special Olympics Ireland. 88 of our athletes represented Team Ireland at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles. This team of 88 athletes was supported by a 40 strong management team and coaches as well as 154 volunteers. The team enjoyed great success at these World Games not only bringing back 82 medals but also many of our athletes achieved personal bests and have amazing memories that will last a lifetime. Athletes who did not compete in the World Games continue to train and compete at regional level working towards their own goals and for future Games as Special Olympics enters the next four year cycle.
