What Is Sansum Diabetes Research Institute?

Sansum Diabetes Research Institute (SDRI) has been on the cutting edge of diabetes research, clinical care and education since our founding in 1944 by Dr. William Sansum, the first U.S. physician to manufacture and administer insulin in the treatment of diabetes. Today SDRI has an international reputation for research and innovation in the creation, development and application of smart technologies. With an established world class reputation for innovation in the field of artificial pancreas and diabetes in pregnancy, SDRI has ambitious plans to broaden its area of technological expertise and influence to impact positively on a range of areas within type 1 and type 2 diabetes at a practical level. SDRI is continuing to develop new and innovative approaches to the education of clinicians, people with diabetes and their families. SDRI is a provider of healthcare in partnership with academic institutions, diabetes centers and primary care physicians. SDRI is dedicated to improving the lives of people impacted by diabetes through research, education, and patient care. Education and Outreach: SDRI understands that whether newly diagnosed or living with diabetes for a long period of time, it is an overwhelming burden. Proper support is critical in one's successful management of diabetes. SDRI provides classes in both English and Spanish ranging from nutrition, exercise, and healthy living. SDRI further provides a variety of outreach programs for children, adults and seniors impacted by both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Care: SDRI offers care for people with diabetes in specialized areas including pediatrics and diabetes during pregnancy. Not long ago, women with diabetes were told not to have children. Thanks to the protocols developed at SDRI, women with diabetes worldwide can confidently have healthy babies. The focus of the diabetes pediatric clinic is the use of advanced technologies, like insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, to help children and their parents with diabetes care. SDRI also believes in the importance of supporting patient's individual needs. Our singular focus is to improve the health and quality of life of men, women and children throughout the central coast and millions around the world who are impacted by diabetes.
