What Is Sam Levitz Furniture?
Don't like your sofa? Levitz or leave it. Retailer Levitz Furniture Incorporated (LFI) owns Levitz Furniture Corp. The company offers moderately priced brand-name furniture, as well as linens and accessories, through about 75 stores (nearly half are in California). Intense competition, poor merchandising, and poor locations pushed Levitz's customers elsewhere, and LFI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1997. It emerged in February 2001 as part of holding company Levitz Home Furnishings, Inc. (LHFI), which is controlled by James Rubin. LHFI also owns the Seaman Furniture chain, which operates Levitz's stores in the eastern US and performs corporate functions, such as distribution, for both chains.
