What Is Safe Haven School?
Safe Haven School Offers a Unique Approach to Special Education. Safe Haven School offers a new and highly anticipated alternative for families and placement professionals who are seeking the best possible environment for children in with emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, and attentional difficulties. We serve children from Kindergarten through grade 12. These children may have a diagnosis of depression, bipolar disorder, severe anxiety disorders including social phobia, separation anxiety, selective mutism, post-traumatic stress and obsessive-compulsive disorders, ADHD, LD, NVLD, and multiple diagnoses. Students who are appropriate for Safe Haven School may be average or above intellectually, but are emotionally fragile. Instead of being placed alongside children with externalizing behaviors, they need to be in a safe, secure environment, away from the additional stressors of ridicule or intimidation. These students make easy targets and need to be protected from verbal or physical aggression that may cause additional stress or refer them to the root of their post-traumatic disorder. These are children who need to be drawn out of depression or paralyzing anxiety to learn coping skills at a young age, so when they reach adolescence they do not turn to drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, self-injury or suicide.
