What Is SRO Housing Corporation?
SRO Housing Corporation: Opening Doors and Transforming Lives SRO Housing Corporation has a 30-year history of transforming dilapidated properties in downtown Los Angeles into contemporary studio apartments. Everything we do is focused on revitalizing the downtown the Central City East community known as Skid Row. We have developed over 2,300 units of affordable housing and are recognized as one of the largest housing providers in the community. We are especially proud of our role in changing lives by providing a sense of dignity and hope. Our commitment to improving this community includes renovation and development projects like the transformation of the burned-out shell of the Yankee Cocktail Lounge into the Yankee Apartments and the resurrection of the infamous Hotel Hell as the new Ford Apartments. Now, another transformation is in the works... The Rosslyn Hotel Apartments is our 30th residential property. It is a registered historic property built in 1923, designed by architect John Parkinson who also designed iconic Los Angeles structures including Los Angeles City Hall. The 13-story beaux arts building suffered the indignities of age and had fallen into desperate disrepair. It was described in a 2001 Los Angeles Times article as a Skid Row flophouse. SRO Housing purchased the building in 2010 and completed a dramatic makeover with ground-level retail space and housing with on-site supportive services. The marble and mahogany lobby and a soaring sunlit atrium/mezzanine were restored to historic preservation standards. Each of the 264 units have been transformed into comfortable modern studio apartments for homeless and low-income residents. For the men and women who move into the completed Rosslyn Hotel Apartments, the keys to their new homes open the door to a new life. Our 30th Aniversary and grand opening of our 30th residential property, An Evening at the Historic Rosslyn Hotel was celebrated in 2015. www.srohousing.org/events
