SERFILCO introduced magnetic-coupled pumps, which became an immediate success because they had no seals which could leak. With the development and testing of plating on plastic, chemical manufacturers all over began to use the pumps and filters assembled by the company for their pilot work. The main reason was that this equipment contained no metal components in contact with the plating solution. The company also started to make vertical pumps built from plastic fittings (credit for this goes to Gil Alinder, former president of Superior Plating in Minneapolis). Manufacture of horizontal pumps was begun about 1964. SERFILCO put the mechanical seal outside the pump so as not to expose the metal parts of the seal to the solution. The company also designed an external seal with a second seal suitable for water flushing between them. This made it possible to continuously pump electroless nickel solutions which contained abrasives and which also required the use of SERFILCO's plastic filter chambers.
