What Is SERC Reliability Corporation?
The SERC Reliability Corporation (SERC) is a nonprofit corporation responsible for promoting and improving the reliability of the bulk power systems in all or portions of 16 central and southeastern states. SERC, initially called the Southeastern Electric Reliability Council, was formed in 1970 as a voluntary association of members comprising electric industry reliability stakeholders in the southeast. SERC was incorporated as a 501(c)(6) nonprofit corporation in 2005 and in 2006 SERC changed its name to SERC Reliability Corporation. In 2007 SERC executed an agreement with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) for the purpose of carrying out the responsibilities and authorities of a regional entity as defined by Section 215 of the Federal Power Act; Chapter I, Title 18, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 39; other Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulations and directives, and NERC rules of procedure.
