What Is Royal Hobart Hospital?

Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is Australia's second oldest hospital and first began serving the Hobart community in 1804. It moved to its present site in the Hobart CBD in 1820. RHH is Tasmania’s largest hospital and its major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, it works closely with the University of Tasmania and other institutions. RHH provides acute, sub acute, mental health and aged care inpatient and ambulatory services to a population of about 250,000 people in the southern region. The RHH is being redeveloped to improve the delivery of healthcare for Tasmanians. Find out more about the redevelopment of RHH... The Royal provides a comprehensive range of general and specialty medical and surgical services including many statewide services such as cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, extensive burns treatment, hyperbaric medicine, neonatal and paediatric intensive care and high risk obstetrics. Critical care services are often the patients’ first point of contact and are divided into intensive care services and emergency medicine services. RHH provides a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week emergency department, and critical care comprises a 14 bed combined Intensive Care Unit (including cardiothoracic intensive care) and High Dependency Unit. The Emergency Department, located under the Liverpool Street forecourt opened in March 2007. The department includes an assessment and planning and a short stay observation unit. ED has approximately 60,000 presentations per year.
