What Is Project Hope Boston?

Project Hope works in partnership with women and families in the Dorchester and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston on their journeys up and out of poverty. We do this by being a catalyst for change in the lives of families, and by developing and providing programs and family support solutions to alleviate the impact of economic hardships. Founded in 1981, Project Hope offers a range of direct services, including family shelter, housing search assistance, workforce development and education programs, as well as a family childcare network, to assist families in gaining the resources and skills to overcome homelessness and financial insecurity. Together, these programs serve hundreds of families in the community each year. Over the last four decades, Project Hope has seen Roxbury and North Dorchester transform from a community on a steep decline to a revitalized neighborhood with newly built housing, community gardens, and thriving businesses. Yet, while the infrastructure of the neighbor-hood has improved, the socioeconomic status of the residents has not. Many residents of this community continue to struggle to overcome the disadvantages of poverty. They lack the experience and skills needed to compete in to-day’s economy and face significant barriers such as housing instability, lack of affordable childcare and transportation. While Boston’s plans for development and growth in Roxbury are aggressive, Project Hope and our community partners are working to ensure our residents and program participants benefit from job growth and economic opportunity as well.
