What Is Piedmont Federal Savings and Loan Association?

Piedmont Federal got its start in 1903 when a small group of businessmen saw a need for a reliable source for home financing in Winston-Salem and created Piedmont Building and Loan Association. In 1911, a young man from Stokes County named Nicholas Mitchell became managing officer. Mr. Mitchell proved to be such a good manager that his leadership helped the Association prepare for the turbulent times ahead. Through Mr. Mitchell's guidance, not a single depositor lost a penny during the Great Depression. N.W. Mitchell followed in his father's footsteps and led the institution from the 1950s into the 1980s. Today, the family tradition continues with CEO Nick W. Mitchell, Jr. at the helm and steering Piedmont Federal into the next 100 years.
