What Is PJM?
PJM Interconnection, operator of the world’s largest competitive wholesale electricity market and North America’s largest centrally dispatched control area. PJM functions in an essential arena, one that has seen as much change during the past few years as it has over the past few decades. PJM strives to provide enhanced value to the stakeholders we serve. Some of these highlights include: Improved Reliability - Since PJM implemented market incentives in April 1997, generation owners have improved equipment performance by nearly 35 percent. This improved performance translates into real savings, about $1.2 million on a hot summer day, New power supply - PJM’s regional transmission planning process creates the proper incentives to attract future generation. More than 9,000 MW have come on line, another 4,000 MW are under construction and 10,000 MW are under evaluation, Price Transparency - By providing access to prices and other real-time information, customers are empowered to make informed business decisions, and Demand response - PJM’s demand-response programs enable customers to manage their own electricity costs. These programs grew 300 percent in 2002.
