What Is Oxford Advanced Surfaces?

OAS's unique technology, Onto™, chemically modifies the surface of hard-to-bond materials to deliver improved adhesion, whether these surfaces are in finished form or sheets, particles or fibres. So why is that important? Everything you use, from a phone to a hypercar, is bonded, painted or coated somewhere. Modern materials (composites, lightweight metals) deliver excellent engineering properties, but often present significant adhesion and coating challenges to the manufacturer. Industry faces a paradigm shift in materials processing – current solutions are ineffective, unscalable or detrimental to the environment. OAS provides unique, effective and simple solutions that address these issues in modern adhesion challenges. We make the coating and bonding of advanced materials simple. Advanced materials are highly desirable because they combine light weight with strength, flexibility and resistance to the operating environment. Mass-market adoption has been limited for some key materials due to cost, recyclability and the ability to process them at scale. The materials industry is focused on overcoming the material cost and environmental barriers. However, many of the processing issues remain – the areas we target. Onto™ products modify the surface of hard-to-bond materials in many forms so they solve challenges in various types of applications. For panels, sheets, films and 3D moulded shapes, Onto™ products prevent paint and coating delamination and improve bonding between dissimilar materials. For fibres, fabrics and powders, Onto™ modifies the surface properties to provide improved interaction with matrix materials within reinforced plastic composite structures. OAS provides engineering services and solutions to companies that design and manufacture products using advanced materials. We have a highly skilled team of chemists and application engineers who can apply the Onto™ technology to various applications across our defined market segments.
