What Is OSF IPMR (Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)?

OSF IPMR is a nonprofit organization with deep roots in the community going back over 60 years, formerly IPMR. IPMR opened its doors in 1950 with the goal of improving function and quality of life for injured World War II veterans and victims of polio in conjunction with Caterpillar’s Return-to-Work Program. The prestigious “Peoria Plan” became the model for rehabilitation centers across the United States whose early visionaries were Dr. Harold Vonachen of Caterpillar, Bill Rutherford and Dr. Robert Hart. Though initially endowed by the Forest Park Foundation, today IPMR reaps the benefits of Peoria’s tradition of philanthropy through donors who give to numerous client-care programs providing rehabilitation and treatment services. Through your generosity, you help us serve ever-growing numbers of patients who come from all over the Central Illinois area to receive the best in compassionate, individualized care regardless of the ability to pay. From the beginning, IPMR has been a leader of comprehensive medical rehabilitation services getting people back to their daily lives by helping them overcome physical, emotional, social and vocational difficulties due to injury or disease. IPMR was the first to offer the services most people think of as physical rehabilitation. Among them are: orthopedic rehabilitation electrodiagnostic medicine aquatic therapy ergonomics breast cancer rehabilitation balance vestibular rehabilitation Senior World, an adult day program—one of the first in the state of Illinois and still the only one in this region.
