What Is New York Power Authority?
The New York Power Authority is the largest non-federal public power agency in the country. It owns and operates a number of clean generating facilities throughout the state, including two large hydroelectric projects on the Niagara and St. Lawrence rivers. It also owns and operates more than 1,400 circuit miles of high-voltage transmission lines--about one-third of all such lines in the state. Under Governor George E. Pataki's leadership, the Power Authority has been a national leader in energy efficiency, electric transportation and the pioneering of new technologies such as fuel cells and solar energy systems.
