What Is New Destiny Housing Corporation?

New Destiny’s mission is to end the cycle of violence for low-income families and individuals at risk of homelessness and domestic violence by connecting them to safe, permanent housing and services. To achieve our mission, we build and manage housing with on-site services; offer innovative programs that empower victims of abuse to find and retain affordable housing; and expand access to permanent housing resources for low-income families. Since its launch in 1994, New Destiny has completed 15 residential projects with 305 units of permanent and transitional housing; developed the only citywide program that provides housing information and technical assistance to several thousand survivors and their advocates each year; created a residential service model targeted to domestic violence survivors who reside in New Destiny-owned housing to promote their stability and safety; and achieved significant program and policy changes that have created more housing resources for domestic violence survivors. Our 22 years of experience and data show that affordable housing combined with voluntary, on-site services can break the cycle of violence and homelessness. Service-enriched housing enables vulnerable families to remain housed and safe and begin to establish a toehold in the economy. For the children, housing stability and supports result in improved physical and behavioral health as well as academic performance. A recent study of New Destiny’s Family Support Program by researchers from Rutgers University and Baruch College confirms that affordable housing combined with appropriate on-site services helps ensure housing stability and empowers residents to progress in other areas of their lives.
