What Is National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE)?

The National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), a member of the Defense Intrepid Network for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Brain Health and a directorate of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, is dedicated to improving the lives of service members and families affected by TBI and psychological health through innovative research and transformation. The Defense Intrepid Network for TBI and Brain Health (DI Network) includes the NICoE and Intrepid Spirit Centers (ISCs) who collaborate closely with partners across the Department of Defense, Military Health System (MHS), federal government, academia, and other public and private industries. This network supports the MHS’ TBI Pathway of Care, which makes sure patients have a point of entry to the care system; a clear path through diagnosis, treatment, and reintegration; and consistent access to high quality TBI treatment and research. Serving as a research hub, the NICoE uses the most current, high-tech clinical resources to advance medical science in TBI and psychological health. Since its founding in 2010, the NICoE has served as an authority in TBI care, research, education, and transformation by establishing a patient-focused interdisciplinary care model, providing support and best practices for the developing DI Network, establishing firm foundational research to improve TBI care, and developing the TBI Portal—now the Defense Health Agency’s enterprise application for TBI—to synchronize clinical care.
