What Is NSW Ambulance?

We are committed to providing high quality out-of-hospital clinical care to over 7.25 million people in NSW, distributed across an area of 801,600 square kilometers. In 2012/13 we provided over 1,219,262 total responses (both emergency and non-emergency) compared to 1,183,795 total responses in 2011/12. There were on average 3340 responses per day - this is equivalent to a response every 25.9 seconds. While the delivery of emergency out-of-hospital health care continues to be our primary focus, we are also committed to community safety and prevention programs, and work together with stakeholders and the NSW community on developing a range of community education programs and awareness packages. We employ over 4000 people, with 90 per cent being operational staff involved in the front line delivery of services. This includes paramedics, control centre staff, flight nurses and specialised areas, such as helicopter paramedics. We offer a range of employment opportunities for advancement and ongoing development. Our front line staff have the opportunity to specialise into diverse areas, such as intensive care and extended care, special operations and special casualty access, aeromedical, medical retrieval and rescue, snow operations, rapid response and counter disaster. The remaining 10 per cent of our workforce are corporate and support staff working in areas such as policy development, human resources, public affairs, payroll, administrative support, automotive repairs and stores. We have a fully accredited Ambulance Education Centre, as well as regional training units that deliver in-service training, online learning courses and clinical support programs. NSW Ambulance has been voted the most trusted profession by Readers Digest for seven years running, and has been recognised with a number of awards, including the 2013 NSW Health Innovation Awards and NSW Health Symposium 2013 People’s Choice Award for its Frequent User Management initiative.
