What Is Monroe County?

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office (www.keysso.net) is dedicated to providing a safe and secure community through partnerships, and works to attain the highest level of professionalism and accountability. The Sheriff's Office provides law enforcement service to all of the Florida Keys, which include approximately 112 miles of islands branching off the southern tip of Florida. The main highway, U.S. 1, runs from Florida City to Key West, crossing 45 bridges that connect the islands. In order to provide progressive service, the Sheriff's Office employs 567 people. Of these, 197 are road patrol officers and detectives, 162 are Corrections Officers, 167 serve as support staff members, and 41 people are employed by the HIDTA Group (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area), which is managed by the Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office has new, state-of-the-art detention facilities located in Stock Island, Marathon, and Plantation Key. They have a fully equipped S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons and Tactics) team, as well as a dive team, bomb squad, special investigations unit (specializing in drug investigations) and two K-9 teams.
