What Is Mid-America Christian University?
Today, Mid-America Christian University enjoys a reputation as a thriving university with core Christian values in the heart of Oklahoma. But its rich history started with humble beginnings and took many interesting turns before arriving at its current position. MACU was founded as the South Texas Bible Institute in Houston, Texas in 1953, under the leadership of Dr. Max R. Gaulke. The school enrolled 26 students who dubbed themselves "The Pioneer Class" of the institution. In 1966, Gulf Coast Bible College became an associate member of the American Association of Bible Colleges and was granted full membership in 1968. Regional accreditation was granted in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1978. After the school moved to its current location in Oklahoma City in 1985, it became Mid-America Bible College, under the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. As the college grew and began offering its degrees internationally, a new institutional name was chosen to communicate the university's expanding mission. In 2003, the institution changed its name to Mid-America Christian University. Today, MACU is continuing its commitment to its core Christian values and developing the leadership of tomorrow.
