What Is Metropolitan Public Defender?

Metropolitan Public Defender (MPD) is a private, non-profit law firm committed to providing high-quality criminal defense for indigent clients. Established in 1971, the Oregon firm has an office in Multnomah County, Portland, OR, and one in Washington County, Hillsboro, OR. It is the mission of MPD to deliver the best possible representation to clients in court-appointed cases ranging from misdemeanor cases to felony cases, including homicides, in addition to juvenile cases and civil commitment proceedings. Along with its reputation for excellence, the firm is also noted for its long-time involvement with innovative drug courts and community courts and for its in-house experts on alternative sentencing programs. MPD is committed to the concept of team defense, involving investigators and legal assistants, as an effective method of providing the highest level of representation. Attorneys at MPD receive the training, supervision and support needed to become skilled legal technicians, superb trial lawyers, and compassionate advocates for their clients. Treated with respect and dignity, MPD's clients receive more than a legal defense: for some it's the beginning of a journey to rebuild shattered lives and become contributing members of society. MPD's sentencing advocacy is a complement to its excellent trial work. MPD has pioneered the effort to identify and utilize sentencing alternatives that address the needs of the client helping to reduce or eliminate incarceration, get people into treatment programs, track expert resources, and increase chances for housing or employment opportunities and changed lives. Handling over 17,000 criminal cases per year, MPD is nationally recognized for its leadership in the public defense community, its training programs, and the guidance, supervision and support of its attorneys. With this reputation and role comes an abiding interest in criminal justice system issues, and the knowledge and ability to affect change in those systems both at the county and state levels.
