What Is Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center?
Sponsored by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center employs more than 1,300 people and has more than 150 physicians including 85 on the Active Medical Staff. As a regional health center, the staff provides a comprehensive range of medical care for residents of Dubois and surrounding counties including more than 7,700 inpatients and 172,000 outpatients. Over 1,000 babies were born at Memorial Hospital during the past year, which set the all-time record! Memorial Hospital was named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® for 2008 by Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of health care. Of 6,000 hospitals nationwide, Memorial is one of only a few hospitals to be selected for this distinction, which recognizes performance in nine key measures including clinical outcomes, patient safety, operational efficiency, financial results and service to the community. This is the second time Memorial Hospital has been recognized with this honor – the first being 2004 when the award was known as Solucient 100 Top Hospitals®. Memorial Hospital has also been honored by the Premier healthcare alliance with the 2007 Premier | CareScience Select Practice National Quality Award for superior patient outcomes in both quality and efficiency. It is one of only 49 hospitals nationally, the top one percent of acute inpatient facilities, to be recognized with the Select Practice Award. The data used for determining this award include 16 different clinically relevant indicators of risk, more than any other national quality award or designation. The quality index is calculated by combining the outcome deviations for mortality, morbidity and complications into a single quality measure for each facility. The combined quality and efficiency ratings are used to determine the award recipients. In addition, Cleverley + Associates listed Memorial Hospital as a “Five-Star Hospital” in its book, 2007 State of the Hospital Industry, which outlines the financial position of the U.S. hospital industry and includes an assessment of the value a hospital adds to its community. Memorial Hospital is listed in the top 20% of non-teaching, small hospitals across the country. The Community Value Index™ is comprised of nine measures evaluating hospital performance in three areas: financial viability and plant reinvestment, hospital cost structure, and hospital charge structure. The index suggests that “a hospital provides value to the community when it is financially viable and is appropriately reinvesting in the facility, maintains a low-cost structure, and has reasonable charges.”
