Every Child at McKinley has lived through extreme trauma. Their difficult, often horrendous, childhood experiences have left them confused, angry and afraid. Most need help in virtually every aspect of life: learning to play, learning to trust, learning to take care of themselves and get along with others. Most of all, McKinley's children need to gain the self worth and inner motivation that comes from knowing that they are loved. Annually, McKinley provides residential treatment for over 200 children. As many as 88 live on the San Dimas campus, where cottage homes, nature wooded grounds and vast greenbelts of grass support the healing process. Each cottage family is comprised of 10 children. Each child has a bedroom that he shares with one other child of the same age. The cottages are surrounded by 46 acres of playing fields, a collective dining room, counseling offices and the specialized Canyon View School.
