What Is Los Angeles School Police Department?
The LASPD employs 404 sworn police officers, 138 school safety officers (SSOs), and has 38 support personnel. These dedicated men and women provide police services 24 hours a day/7days a week to over 900,000 students, 66,000 employees, over 1,342 schools and facilities spanning 710 square miles. The LASPD was established in 1948, and, over the last 60 years, has steadily grown and expanded the services provided to the LAUSD, which is the second largest school district in the United States. The LASPD is the second largest school police department in the United States and the fourth largest police department in Los Angeles County. The LASPD is committed to providing highly specialized police services that focus on creating a safe and tranquil environment for students and staff on school campuses, which enhance and facilitate the learning process. In addition, the LASPD fosters partnerships and working relationships with parents, local businesses, community leaders, and the 15 outside law enforcement agencies to create safe passages for students to go to and from school. In order to achieve this, the men and women of the LASPD provide police services with the following values: · Maintain the highest level of integrity and professionalism; · Respect individual rights and freedoms; · Consult with, and be responsible to the needs of the community; · Uphold the rule of law; · Be culturally sensitive; · Develop, mentor, and be responsible to the needs and welfare of all police staff through example and leadership.
