LREI is an academically demanding, rigorous, progressive preK-12 school. This is true to the original purpose of our school's progressive founder - to provide a better way to achieve the highest levels of academic preparation and accomplishment. Throughout our 14-year spectrum, we combine active learning (asking questions, solving problems and undertaking projects that have real meaning), with a powerful emphasis on depth of understanding and inquiry. This motivates students to respond to the highest levels of academic demand - and it makes sense of the very large efforts needed to master what would otherwise be bodies of knowledge without relevance and skills without meaningful application. A second key pillar of our philosophy is that we begin with complete respect for the dignity and worth of each individual, and therefore embrace the diversity we see as central to the school's community and curriculum. Ours is a purposeful community in which ethnic, socio-economic, religious background, or sexual orientation are irrelevant to the educational foreground, except to the extent of being subjects for inquiry, understanding, and celebration. With these thoughts in mind, we therefore provide opportunities for learning that require researching and responding to real problems and issues, and that develop critical thinking and intelligent action rather than compliance and conformity. We seek most of all to develop the habit of approaching problems with an open mind - perhaps the hardest of all educational outcomes - and therefore reduce the power of preconception and prior bias. We want our students to learn to arrive at conclusions, rather than start from them. Finally, we stand for progress and the belief that our students will contribute to a better world.
