What Is Kathy's House?

Kathy's House is a nonprofit 501(c)3 hospital guest house committed to providing affordable lodging and caring support in a "home away from home" environment for families who need to travel to Milwaukee for medical care. Since 2001, we have helped more than 17,000 out-of-town patients to access needed medical care in Milwaukee. We keep families together during a medical crisis and research shows that patients who have family nearby have better outcomes. Kathy's House accept referrals from all Milwaukee area hospitals for patients of all ages and their families. Today 90% of our guests are referred by Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin and 85% are cancer patients or a caregiver for a cancer patient. Many families who stay at Kathy's House are from low or fixed income households. By providing access to care for these families, we help address a profound societal ill; health disparities among low income and under represented groups such as minorities and/or families living in rural areas or cities much smaller than Milwaukee. Our House is a refuge from the stress of a serious illness. Guest and their families can eat, sleep and be with others when they want, or be alone when they need quite healing. Each private suite has its own bathroom, TV and telephone. Other amenities make guests feel at home including a fully equipped kitchen, communal dining room and laundry room. Free, nutritious dinners made by volunteers weekly and transportation to and from hospitals, pharmacies and grocery stores allow guests to forget about day-today living so they can focus on what matters most... getting better together. All of our guests are battling a serious illness or caring for a sick loved one, an experience that fosters closeness and compassion within our community. Mutual support thrives here. 90% of guests rate their stay as "Best Possible Experience" on guest satisfaction surveys.
