Its roots lie with Johnston Memorial Hospital, which opened in 1951 with 100 patient beds and a pledge to make health care accessible to all residents, regardless of ability to pay. Today, the hospital has a new name-Johnston Medical Center-Smithfield-to reflect its modern-day position as flagship of the health care system.
