Jacob Holm & Sonner A/S was first founded in 1794 when Jacob Holm set up his first company in Christianshavn, Denmark. Originally a family business, the company was handed down over many generations. With its humble origins as a grocer's shop, the Holm dynasty has never failed to move with the times, and boasts one of the most diverse histories in modern business. In the 19th century, Jacob Holm owned its own shipping line, calling on ports dotted around Europe, importing and exporting goods from the then nation states. As business grew, so did the reach and power of the Jacob Holm corporation, and the company frequented trade routes that reached as far as East India and Asia. Always practical, rope production was close to Jacob Holm's heart from the outset, using it to augment his strength around the ports of Europe, and using it on his growing number of ships. His vast business acumen and sense of enterprise meant the rope makers' guild was not kindly disposed towards Jacob Holm, so that he soon took over all shipping supply activities. Thanks to his monopoly of shipyards, his rope production business continued to flourish. In 1893, the rope factory was extended with the introduction of two spinning works, producing saddle-making thread, lines strands, saw cords, sisal strands and clothes lines. Export volumes of these items to Northern Europe were considerable. Later, four additional departments were added. First, a hard fiber department manufactured manila, sisal and coir for binder-twine and rope. Second, the company introduced a soft fiber departments, which prepared jute, flax and hemp for a wide range of products for parcel-strings, cord, rope to yarns in textile industry. The company's steel cable departments made wire and hawsers for ships, and the dyeing and bleaching section added a coloring capacity for natural fibers and threads. After 200 years, with innovation, quality, and client satisfaction as its foremost driving forces, the company continues to look the future with well-founded optimism.
