What Is Hotel Ella?
About Hotel Ella: Located near the heart of downtown Austin and walking distance to the University of Texas campus, Hotel Ella is a stylish boutique hotel housed in the historic Goodall Wooten House, one of Austin’s original landmark estates. Constructed in 1900, the Greek revival-style mansion underwent an extensive renovation in 2013, and now offers the perfect balance between modernity and a rich history rooted in the fabric of the neighborhood and the university. With 47 guest rooms, a cabana-lined pool, and a wrap-around veranda overlooking our front lawn, Hotel Ella features beautifully designed outdoor and indoor spaces perfectly suited for your vacation, wedding, corporate event, etc. Our Story: In 1878, Thomas Dudley Wooten, one of the founding fathers of the University of Texas, purchased the land on which Hotel Ella now sits. Wooten’s son, Goodall, moved into the home on the property in 1900 with his new wife, Miss Ella Newsome, who oversaw its transformation into the Greek revival structure you see today. In 1910, Goodall asked Ella: Would she rather have a trip around the world, or have renovations made to the house? She chose both, then hired legendary Swiss carver, Peter Mansbendel, to craft the home’s intricate woodworking. The hotel’s namesake, Ella was known for her impeccable taste, also calling upon Neiman Marcus to redecorate the entire home in 1925. After undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation, Hotel Ella opened in 2013 as a luxury boutique hotel, featuring 47 guest rooms and suites, a casual American bistro called Goodall’s Kitchen, and an extensive art program showcasing the works of Texas Modernists. Thanks to its rich history, Hotel Ella can be found on the National Register of Historic Places.
