What Is Hornsby Shire Council?

The Hornsby Shire region covers an area of 510 square kilometres, with nearly two-thirds of its area comprising national park and bushland. The Shire includes land from Eastwood in the south to Wisemans Ferry in the north and Brooklyn in the east. The traditional owners of the Shire were the Aboriginal people of the Darug and Guringai language groups. Council continues to work with these traditional landholder groups to support the celebration of Aboriginal history and culture in the Shire. European settlement in the Shire dates from 1794 when the first land grants were made along the Hawkesbury River, with land used mainly for farming. The opening of the Newcastle and North Shore railway lines in the 1890s resulted in Hornsby CBD becoming a railway town and a major centre.
