What Is Holocaust Center for Humanity?
For a generation, the Holocaust Center for Humanity has been teaching tolerance to students of all ages through universal lessons of the Holocaust. Free of charge, we send teaching trunks to schools throughout the Northwest, packed with all the resources and teaching materials needed to teach an age appropriate Holocaust section. Through lessons that explore the roles of bystanders, victims, perpetrators, and "upstanders," we train and work with teachers who challenge students to think critically and become engaged citizens. This year, over 20,000 students will hear accounts of Holocaust experiences from local Survivors, Liberators, and Legacy Speakers. 18,000 will view survivor testimonials and research the Holocaust and genocide on our website. We will welcome over 15,000 students and other visitors to our education center and museum. 9,000 students attending 150 schools will learn lessons of tolerance using our Teaching Trunks. 5,000 subscribers will stay connected through social media and our monthly e-newsletter. 3,500 teachers will tap into our resources and receive individual support from Center staff. 250 teachers will attend our continuing education seminars. 800 students from around the region will enter our annual Writing, Art, and Film Contest. After introducing the Holocaust to their students using our resources and programs, teachers talk about a culture change in their classrooms, hallways, and on the playing fields. When they study the Holocaust and human rights, students begin to understand that their choices and voices make a difference. Museum: The Center's museum exhibit explores the Holocaust through personal, local survivor stories that must be told. Through their testimony, artifacts, and related narrative, this deeply moving and sometimes uplifting exhibit explores themes that are as meaningful today as ever.
