What Is Helping Charlotte Area Students in Need?

Classroom Central was established in 2002 when a team of local business leaders set out to provide free school supplies to children living in poverty. Today, Classroom Central serves teachers and students in nearly 200 schools across 6 school districts: Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Gaston County, Iredell/Statesville, Union County, City of Kannapolis, and Lancaster County, SC. Eligible schools are those in which 50% or more of students receive free or reduce price lunch. We serve high needs students via four programs: Classroom Central Free Store – Teachers and other school personnel in qualifying high-needs schools “shop” for free school supplies throughout the academic year. All materials distributed are used to create inviting learning environments and to support the academic and personal growth of students in need. Classroom Central Mobile Free Store (ClassVROOM Central) – ClassVROOM Central takes the shopping experience to eligible schools that are geographically further from our Free Store so we can reach more students and teachers. Classroom Up – The Classroom Up program is the first of its kind in the United States and allows teachers at CMS to order five essential school supplies (copy paper, notebooks, notebook paper, pencils & pens) via an online portal. The free supplies are then delivered directly to the school. Backpacks & Basics – With the help of sponsors, Classroom Central provides backpacks and supply kits to all students in select high needs schools.
