What Is HealthIM?

HealthIM's vision is to assist law enforcement, first responders, and health care professionals to better manage incidents involving persons with serious mental disorders who are in crisis. Based on a suite of mental health assessment instruments developed by the non-profit research organization interRAIâ„¢, HealthIM supports assessment of patients within both the community and in-patient settings. Founded by two University of Waterloo graduates, HealthIM was born of a commitment to develop effective software solutions within the complex environment of healthcare informatics. The company enjoyed early success creating contract software, including an ED geriatric risk assessment screener, a Psychiatry Resident mobile app and a medication reconciliation tool for patients with heart failure. In 2015, HealthIM was admitted to the Velocity program, an incubator run by the University of Waterloo. The company has since won two funding competitions and has been featured in numerous trade publications and conferences. Since 2013, HealthIM has developped an application specific to law enforcement agencies. The application is a digital version of the interRAIâ„¢ Brief Mental Health Screener (BMHS), a questionnaire which is completed by front line officers with minimal training using mobile data terminals (MDT). The BMHS is an academically developed and peer-reviewed instrument that computes the risk (scale of 1 to 10) that an individual may harm themselves, harm others or to fail to care for themselves. The BMHS tool was tested and refined over a 2 year period in co-operation with police services across southwestern Ontario including the Brantford Police Service and Niagara Regional Police Service. Feedback from front line officers, management, and Executive Officers was then implemented to improve the software. HealthIM is now negotiating with police services across Ontario and will be commencing a first wave of implementations in summer 2016.
