What Is Global Press?

Global Press exists to create a more just and informed world by employing local journalists to produce ethical, accurate news coverage from the world's least-covered places. Rejecting the mainstream model of foreign correspondence, which deploys elite outsiders on perpetual short-term assignments, Global Press trains and employs a diverse population of female journalists in the communities where they live to produce context-rich, nuanced news coverage. Our stories, produced and disseminated in local language and English, provide local and global audiences with news that elevates awareness and creates actionable opportunities for citizens. Comprised of three brands that form a holistic social enterprise, Global Press is an international media company dedicated to reinventing both the craft and business of global journalism. Global Press operates a training program, Global Press Institute, an award-winning news publication, Global Press Journal, and an innovative syndication division, Global Press News Service. Over the last 15 years, Global Press news stories have created tangible social impact across the world. Our news has changed laws in Nepal and Rwanda, changed policies in Zambia and Uganda and increased access to information for more than 20 million people each month. The organization has won numerous awards for its high-quality journalism and its high-impact business model. Global Press has won more dozens of awards in its history, including the 2020 Chester M. Pierce Human Rights Award, 2020 Media Hero of the Year, numerous Clarion Awards, a Webby and was named one of the 2019's best places to work by Inc. Magazine. Global Press was founded in 2006 by Cristi Hegranes. Today, Hegranes leads the business side of Global Press, which is committed to keeping editorial processes 100% independent. She is the creator of the organization's industry-leading Duty of Care program and the lead author of the Global Press Style Guide.
