What Is GWS Giants?

The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS are the Australian Football League’s 18th and newest club, based out of Sydney Olympic Park. The GIANTS were established in 2008 before entering the national AFL competition ahead of the 2012 season. The GIANTS are led by CEO David Matthews and Head Coach Leon Cameron with prominent infrastructure and engineering services industry leader Tony Shepherd appointed as chairman. The AFL’s commitment to Western Sydney brought about the $60 million redevelopment of the Sydney Showgrounds to become the GIANTS’ home ground, Spotless Stadium. The GIANTS have also forged strong links with the Canberra community, playing a number of home games in the nation’s capital and investing in a range of talent pathway initiatives as part of its PM Capital Academy program. The club has quickly established a deep link with the local western Sydney and Canberra communities through a range of community-based initiatives. The club’s community-focus was further bolstered in 2015 with the introduction of GIANTS Care — the major community initiative that will see the club double its community outcomes and further enrich the lives of people in western Sydney. More broadly, the club has sustained a strong level of growth through the employment of engaged and passionate employees and with an absolute commitment to local communities. On-field the GIANTS have made strong progress since joining the AFL, with a young and highly talented playing list developing into one of the competition’s most exciting teams. The 2015 season saw the club set a new membership record with 13,480 people signing on as GIANTS members in addition to the GIANTS recording the second highest growth rate in home attendances across the AFL. The club continues to expand its commercial footprint with a number of blue-chip and emerging brands partnering the GIANTS.
