What Is Flying Kites?

At Flying Kites, we believe that education is a path out of poverty. Aligned directly with UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), our holistic approach to supporting schools and improving student outcomes in rural Kenya is framed under three key areas of focus that also address SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), and SDG 5 (Gender Equality), ultimately contributing to the agenda of SDG 1 (No Poverty). Through our Teacher Training Center and Academy, we identify, pilot and scale integrative programs that nurture students’ development academically, physically, and emotionally, by: Training Teachers: The Flying Kites Teacher Training Center & Academy serves as a hub for resources and innovation within our community of preschool and primary school teachers – providing educators and school leaders from across our district with a multi-faceted approach to capacity building that lays the foundation for effective, student-centered instruction. Providing Meals: With student hunger identified by teachers in our Network as a primary obstacle to learning in our region, Flying Kites partners with schools, teachers, and parents to address the goals of SDG 2 by collaborating on the design and implementation of School Meals Programs through a cost-sharing model that provides a daily warm and nutritious meal to every student. To promote the sustainability of these programs, Flying Kites equips schools with the tools and training needed to develop monitoring and evaluation systems and leverages on-site agricultural opportunities and partnerships with local farmers. Empowering Girls: Directly serving the objectives of SDG 5 and SDG 3, our Girls United initiative empowers and supports young women across our rural district to stay in school, stand up for their rights, and become confident agents of change for themselves and in their communities.
