What Is Erie County Medical Center?

University Emergency Medical Services is a non-profit practice plan affiliated with the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University at Buffalo that provides medical staff for the emergency departments at Buffalo General Hospital and the Erie County Medical Center. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality emergency care available in an environment committed to patient satisfaction. We are also dedicated to our mission of teaching and research in emergency medicine. Nearly 85,000 Western New Yorkers received their care in our emergency departments last year. G. Richard Braen, MD has chaired the department since its inception in 1991. Michael Manka, MD and Robert McCormack, MD are the clinical directors for the emergency departments at the Erie County Medical Center and Buffalo General Hospital. Education and research play a major role in our identity. All of our physicians are board certified in emergency medicine bringing a wealth of knowledge to our residents and students ranging from EMS to emergency ultrasound to emergency telemedicine. Pioneering research has been completed in both emergency ultrasonography and telemedicine. The first trauma ultrasound performed by emergency physicians in the United States was performed by our physicians in 1991. David Ellis, MD, Director of Telehealth and Healthcare Informatics, operates the largest emergency telemedicine program in New York State. Other areas of research that we are currently involved in are, motor vehicle injury prevention, wound care, domestic violence and tele-trauma simulation. While we do enjoy our education and research programs, patient care is still our first priority.
