What Is Digitel?
Digitel Corporation was founded in 1983 by Bryan C. Tate, the company\'s current Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. The name of the company was derived from a vision of the emergence of Digital Telecommunications, hence the name \"Digitel.\" The company was founded on the principles of unsurpassed customer satisfaction and financial stability, and on the values of quality, integrity, professionalism and a commitment to excellence. Digitel\'s commitment to these same principals and values continues to this day. Today, Digitel is one of the largest independent distributors for Nortel Networks, achieving the status of Premier Business Partner. In 1985, Digitel initiated its National Accounts program, providing its large multi-site customers a single source for their national telecommunications systems requirements. Today, Digitel provides seamless support to over 50 national accounts across the country. In 1988, the company became the first independent distributor authorized by Nortel Networks to sell its Meridian Norstar product line. Digitel also launched a geographic expansion plan to better serve its customers, opening branch offices in Cincinnati, Nashville and Birmingham. Over the next two years, the company\'s expansion continued as it acquired the operations of Tel Plus in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, acquired the Delaware Valley Telephone Company in Philadelphia and opened branch offices Chicago, Jacksonville and Washington, DC. The company also purchased a 10,000 square foot building in suburban Atlanta to house its Atlanta branch office and its corporate offices. Between 1991 to 1996, Digitel continued to expand its operations, opening branch offices in Charlotte, Dallas, and Ft. Lauderdale and was ranked the 27th largest of 9,500 interconnect companies in the U.S. by Teleconnect Magazine. In 1997, Digitel recognized the communications requirements of its customers were becoming more data and network services driven. In response, Digitel strengthened its product portfolio by adding wide-area data communications services, and local and long distance voice services. Digitel also developed a plan to expand its capabilities and further expand its business, targeting the acquisition of a data services and/or network services company by the end of 1999. During 1998, the company launched a corporate initiative to implement policies and procedures consistent with publicly owned companies, although it remains a privately held company to this day. This included upgrading the finance department, commencement of full scope, independent financial audits, implementation of internal governing contractual commitments and authorized spending levels, election of an independent Board of Directors comprised of highly qualified business and professional people, appointment of an audit committee and adoption of a formal audit charter. In 1999, the company acquired an ISP operation from Nortel Networks which provided entry into the wholesale internet service business with independent telephone companies in the Mid-Atlantic, upper Mid-West and Northwest regions of the country. This operation has been staffed with highly qualified engineers and is positioned to support new business initiatives.
