What Is Cotton and Company?

Cotton & Company LLP is a certified public accounting partnership licensed and in good standing with the Commonwealth of Virginia and many other states and is qualified to practice in all other jurisdictions. Our practice specialty is the business of government. Since our founding in 1981, Cotton & Company has focused its practice on providing services predominantly for governmental agencies and programs. Many clients are repeat clients, which we consider evidence of our record of outstanding and timely performance and our sustained ability to exceed client expectations. History Cotton & Company has held its office locations in Old Town Alexandria, since its inception. Our proximity to many local federal government agency buildings makes us easily accessible to our clients. Cotton & Company was a veteran-owned small business until 2007, and is now classified as a large business under our GSA FABS and MOBIS contracts. Under our GSA Schedule 70 contract, we are classified as a small business. David Cotton founded the firm in 1981, and was appointed to Chairman in 2007. Also that year, Matthew Johnson and Mike Gillespie became managing partners. Cotton & Company has continued to expand its client base and range of services. Once providing limited financial audit services to our federal clients with a handful of auditors, we have grown to a firm of 12 partners and over 140 professionals providing a full range of audit, accounting, IT, and management consulting services. Services One constant has been our focus on the governmental environment. As a result, we are well qualified to provide services in this specialized arena, and all of our personnel are thoroughly familiar with auditing standards, federal accounting standards, cost accounting concepts and principles, and administrative requirements covering a wide variety of governmental assignments. We have completed thousands of engagements for dozens of governmental clients encompassing a broad range of related services: Federal financial statement audits IT system and security audits and reviews Financial and performance audits of government agencies Financial and compliance audits of government contracts and grants Accounting system evaluation and design Audit resolution Litigation support Financial management consulting Training Quality A key to Cotton & Company's long-term and consistent success is partner involvement in daily engagement management. Partners are thus able to provide their unique, specialized perspectives to each engagement, foster continuing relationships with our clients, and enable professional growth for all personnel. We emphasize the importance of quality on all engagements, and direct partner involvement is our commitment. Cotton & Company has a solid, well-earned professional reputation gained since 1981; considerable experience in providing a full range of audit, accounting, and consulting services to federal clients; and a keen interest in remaining in the forefront of our profession.
