What Is Connecting for Good—now a PCs for People organization?
Connecting for Good, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is bridging the Digital Divide in Kansas City by assisting under resourced residents with affordable connectivity, refurbished PCs & digital literacy training. Our three-prong strategy to accomplish this is: Connectivity, Hardware and Digital Literacy: A. Assisting under-resourced families to obtain affordable broadband Internet access, especially in their own homes. We are helping residents to take advantage of Google Fiber’s for seven years of 5 Mb Internet access for $300 plan. For situations like public housing projects where Google Fiber is not a viable option, we get them online using Wi-Fi from various available Inernet providers. B. Helping people in lower income brackets to acquire reasonably priced Internet-connected devices and equipment. We accept donations of computers for this purpose and require those who get them to complete our digital literacy training program. C. Offering digital literacy experiences to help people in under-resourced communities access online resources in order to create a brighter future for themselves and their families. We are developing a mobile computer lab that can be setup in key locations in our targeted communities in order to introduce residents to the world of broadband computing. A group of committed volunteers is in place and we plan to connect with the libraries and other community institutions to conduct free training and awareness sessions.
